Talking 'bout Books

Reading 'Scarlet Feather' a $4 op shop buy. Enjoyable Irish tale about a catering company & the two people that run it - many other characters weaving in & out.

'Sarjan' is now on loan to a friend.

Plotting for a food garden, week 9

Summer is on the way & things are warming up so while I was at Bunnings I picked up some stakes & bamboo sticks, blind & curtain (pity I had to buy them but I couldn't find anything being thrown out!).

This morning I hammered the stakes in & then draped the net curtain (Op shop buy $3) over the stakes, this is just enough shade to keep the hot midday sun at bay. The bamboo I will use to hold the tomatoes up.

Yesterday a couple of friends took me on a 'garden tour'. Below is a view of one - just look at that lettuce!

Her 'plot' is like a mini allotment.

Now I just need a handy person who will hang the bead curtain in front of the back door (to keep sun & flies off) & also to hang the bamboo blind over the kitchen window & I should be all set to cope with the heat. Not that it's been hot YET in fact the weather is perfect & they forecast rain for Tuesday (best day for planting according to the moon!). Might sow seeds with a $1 'Easy Seeder' (bargain of the day!).

Skywatch Friday (Season 4 Episode 20)

The Yanchep boardwalk, now called 'sky bridge' erected by the City of Wanneroo to the disgust of many local residents is in the news again - one more protest - it is officially illegal.

This is what we wanted, a meandering path through the dunes.

This is what we got, a steel structure that is a blinding blot on the beautiful landscape of Yanchep.

As you can see it is overlooking houses, completely spoiling their view.

Not a big turn out of protesters, but those that came are dedicated.

The Wednesday What's It

Letter from my landlord today "mow the front yard" - at least he didn't call it a lawn. So my meadow will go & it will look like a sandpit again.

Better make hay while the sun shines...

Mellow Yellow Monday #44

Postcard sent to me - wish I had bought some postcards while we were there!
Lots more yellow here

Splish, splash!!! 1st swim of the season today, the 2 Ms were just leaving as I didn't get there 'till 8.45 I thought it would be too cold - (it was a bit)- anyway I swam out to the reef where the warmer ocean was splashing in. Just a couple of other people swimming.

Talking 'bout Books

Enjoying 'Sarjan' very much, similar to 'Dutch Point' in that it is an historical novel. This book spans twenty-five years and is mainly set in Western Australia the early days in Fremantle (where I used to live)and Perth.

Plotting for a food garden, week 8

The square looking green & healthy. As the seeds of the Spring Onions didn't come up I got some seedlings from the garden part of Bunnings along with a Strawberry plant (put in hanging basket) & replaced the Cress with seedlings of Beetroot Mix (labeled from 'Diggers Club Heirloom').

Phone books are keeping the water in & squash are doing well in the toilet rolls. Planted Lemon Grass & Lemon Verbena along side of the fig tree & tomatoes.

P.S. Sunday morning - After not much sleep (about 4 hours + some sort of cat naps) I decided what I wanted to do with the other square, the one I had filled with straw. Move the polystyrene boxes from the courtyard, add a large polystyrene box for the middle & put a plastic basket in the middle of that. I tucked straw down the sides to help with insulation. Now I just have to decide what shallow rooted plants to put in the partitions. Seed more lettuce? Herbs? Flowers?

The Wednesday What's It

Yesterday I planted the Aubergines and Squash which were seeded in toilet rolls and showing two leaves. It rained last night and my garbage bins were full again. This morning was cloudy so I quickly put down my other foursquare box & filled it with the straw I was given. Now what??? If I can't grow anything in the box then I suppose I could cook a casserole (would it be the same as a 'hay box'?)Any ideas?
We had a lot more rain, the house is smelling of fresh bread and biscuits and in the mail today were the two calendars I ordered from Vista Print (12 of my digital images) and two postcards. I'm thrilled to bits.

The only bad news is that DELL COMPUTERS have not delivered the goods, not to Western Australia at least don't know about the rest off the world. Fed up with waiting!!! Shame on you DELL.

Talking 'bout Books

Have already forgotten what ‘Her Fathers House’ was about! I have just this minute finished ‘Walk in my Shoes’. It is going to be difficult to review/critique this book at our book club as the author is a friend and a member and she will be at the meeting next Tuesday!
I have been noticing that the comment moderation words are almost getting to be interesting!
Patebonf
Vessyna
Raterapp
What would these 3 mean if they were real words?

Plotting for a food garden, week 7

My Russian Tomatoes are looking good....

..... and the Square is providing a little salad each evening - so what do a few holes matter! If you look in the basket you can see carrots, onions and two parsnips.
So I cheated!!! Here are onions also from Yanchep Paradise!!

passed to me from S. Please go see, click here

Skywatch Friday (Season 4 Episode 18)

Today the sky was blue with a few clouds, the water in the lagoon was emerald with one swimmer & the waves were white with hardly any seaweed.

Gardening in the rain all morning transplanting lettuce. Very humid but not nearly as hot as over East. I'll have a nice little chicken salad tonight.

The Wednesday What's It

I'm being hunted!! Go here to find out more,
Last year I had one in the house & called my next door neighbor to take it outside. Last night I had to be brave when it almost gave me a heart attack when it moved to the toilet door, at least I could reach up & put it in a plastic pot & chuck it outside.
I've been watching that stupid 'I'm a Celebrity get me out of here' & there seems to be far worse things in Queensland. (Don't ask why I'm still watching it!)

Today's Flowers #65

Here is the Mandevilla I planted in September now shooting it's way up the fence.
I've been out chasing a Dell computer today, early Christmas present from Sam. Ordered it 17 days ago - still not been delivered to the shop. Very pissed off.

Talking 'bout Books

Finished ‘Thanks for the Memories’ – it petered out towards the end but I still think it was a very funny book, nice to have a good laugh now & again. Am ¾ of the way through ‘Her Fathers House’ by Belva Plain, one I bought from the Op shop for a couple of dollars, can’t say I’m enjoying it or not. It’s one of those books that you read & then forget what it was all about, one to pass on or put out via Bookcrossing.
Will read ‘Walk in my Shoes’ by Alwyn Evens next as it’s our book club choice this month.

Plotting for a food garden, week 6

The lettuce may need transplanting, the Spinach, Mizuna, Red Gaint Mustard & Cress are being eaten! So am I.
So here we have - The Good - a ladybird I put on some Chinese Broccoli (too late, too late she cried, gotta go see to my house!)

A praying mantis on lavender (gee I'm feeling sleepy)

A skink sunning itself (think I'll just stay here)

The Bad - a caterpillar on mint (munch, munch, munch)

the Mother - a Cabbage White (doing well, son)

& the little house of the fairy. (it wasn't us made all those holes)
