The Wednesday What's It

Not much to say today - this was the only pic I had, it was taken on Monday at the shopping centre. No pics taken today as battery ran out & the others I had on a disk from the old computer just won't work! Played Mah Jong this afternoon & S. had the highest score ever - nearly 2000!!!

Talking 'bout Books

Ebony enjoying the sun.

'Dream of Margaret River' by Penelope Ransby was not my cup of tea!! I did read the parts about Margaret River but not all the chapters on the 'Great' war. I am now halfway through 'September' by Rosamund Pilcher (think I've read it before) nice easy read with lots of lovely characters.

Plotting for a food garden, week 11

The salad plot has survived the heat today, think it got to 37C, gave them some shade from the midday sun. Just off now to pick lettuce etc to go with the Black Russian Tomatoes that are DELICIOUS in spite of being a bit green & holey. So cold ham & salad plus Bills beetroot with honey mustard dressing followed by mashed banana & cream drizzled with homemade strawberry jam.

Mellow Yellow Monday #46

This is about the best I can come up with for Mellow Yellow Monday, a helicopter searching for sharks - no sorry, just checking the hoards denuding our rocks for Abalone!

Talking 'bout Books

This week I just happened to drift into a 2nd hand book shop (last week I picked up ‘A Breath of Snow and Ashes’ by Diana Gabaldon for $5 - #6 to add to my other 5) & found a parcel of 3 books, original price $36, ‘September’ by Rosamunde Pilcher, ‘The Hope’ by Herman Wouk & ‘Appassionata’ By Jilly Cooper, all large hard cover, done up in blue ribbon for $2 – yes that is two dollars!! Then on Friday when I went to Yanchep Library to return ‘The Family Tree’ by Barbara Delinsky. I looked in their recycle box to find ‘Oscar and Lucinda’ by Peter Carey. This is the next book club choice & I ordered a copy as they didn’t have enough to go around. And there it was…… asking price 20cents!!! I couldn’t believe it.
I have just finished reading The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club by Gil McNeil. Large print so I was able to get through it fairly quickly, a feel good kind of story. Humorous, light and very enjoyable – peppered with the word F**k.
Just started on ‘Dream of Margaret River' by Penelope Ransby – a story of love & loss from the Great War, also some history of the area in the South West of Western Australia – very small print so I’m squinting a bit.

Plotting for a food garden, week 10

Hot today, 37 deg.

Needing a shower.

Russian Black tomatoes look as if they are damaged or eaten - not good anyway. Bugger! Wonder what went wrong, not enough water, too much water? And the plant looks sick. Cut two off & this is what they look like!

True Colours Thursday - CREAM

A plate of Cape Gooseberries from next door swapped for parsley. They look nice & I thought they could make good Christmas decorations but I've decided not to get into all that! Didn't really like the taste so swapped them for a bunch of carrots & some pickled beetroot. I do love a bartering system.

If you have a CREAM theme, play along here.

The Wednesday What's It

A chopped off hand resting in a shagpile carpet? No!!
I had my palm read the other day - all good! This little hand 3 1/2cm, I picked up in San Francisco.

My postbox today - thank goodness there was some REAL mail (fantastic slipper card from Pazzolina in France, a stunning sky photo card from Rebecca in USA & an envelope full of fantastic international stamps from Gabriele in Vancouver) 'cause the rest was JUNK!

Really enjoyed looking at these - hope you do (thanks Sam)

Talking 'bout Books

Reading 'Scarlet Feather' a $4 op shop buy. Enjoyable Irish tale about a catering company & the two people that run it - many other characters weaving in & out.

'Sarjan' is now on loan to a friend.

Plotting for a food garden, week 9

Summer is on the way & things are warming up so while I was at Bunnings I picked up some stakes & bamboo sticks, blind & curtain (pity I had to buy them but I couldn't find anything being thrown out!).

This morning I hammered the stakes in & then draped the net curtain (Op shop buy $3) over the stakes, this is just enough shade to keep the hot midday sun at bay. The bamboo I will use to hold the tomatoes up.

Yesterday a couple of friends took me on a 'garden tour'. Below is a view of one - just look at that lettuce!

Her 'plot' is like a mini allotment.

Now I just need a handy person who will hang the bead curtain in front of the back door (to keep sun & flies off) & also to hang the bamboo blind over the kitchen window & I should be all set to cope with the heat. Not that it's been hot YET in fact the weather is perfect & they forecast rain for Tuesday (best day for planting according to the moon!). Might sow seeds with a $1 'Easy Seeder' (bargain of the day!).

Skywatch Friday (Season 4 Episode 20)

The Yanchep boardwalk, now called 'sky bridge' erected by the City of Wanneroo to the disgust of many local residents is in the news again - one more protest - it is officially illegal.

This is what we wanted, a meandering path through the dunes.

This is what we got, a steel structure that is a blinding blot on the beautiful landscape of Yanchep.

As you can see it is overlooking houses, completely spoiling their view.

Not a big turn out of protesters, but those that came are dedicated.

More info here.
